Mrs. Nell L. Oxendine, age 74, of 10850 NC Highway 711 West, Pembroke, NC, was born October 17, 1950 to the late Mr. Roscoe and Mrs. Jessie Mae Locklear. She peacefully departed this life on Friday, April 25, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother: Mr. Michael Wayne Locklear and son-in-law: Mr. Clayton Maynor.
Mrs. Nell began her career working with Lumbee Regional Development Association (LRDA) but after the birth of her daughter decided her heart was at home taking care of her family. Many years later she decided to enter back into the work force and completed her degree at Pembroke State University. She worked for the Public Schools of Robeson County as a school social worker until her health began to decline.
Mrs. Nell was known for her green thumb and the ability to root any kind of flower or plant. She could not only tell you the name of almost any type of flower, but also how much sunlight it needed to flourish and what was the best type of soil to plant it in. She thoroughly enjoyed making trips to Lowes buying so many flowers that they would barely all fit in the car coming home. Even during her sickness her love for flowers continued.
Even more than her love for flowers was her steadfast love for her family. She was a loving wife of 49 years to her husband Delton. She was a devoted mother to Chrissy, that was at EVERY school function, every volleyball, basketball and softball game whether it was a home or away game, and never complained about having to drive her to all the early morning and late-night practices. She was a loving and affectionate grandmother to Zack and Nehemiah who was always spoiling them, refusing to spank them if they needed it, and cooking them pancakes at 10:00 at night if they asked for them. She was a protective sister who looked out for her siblings Michael and Susie and always wanted what was best for them both. She was an aunt who always had something to eat whenever her nieces or nephews came to visit. And if they didn’t eat while at her house, she always sent them home with a big bag of goodies. But most importantly, she was a woman of faith who loved the Lord.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband: Mr. Delton Dean Oxendine of the home; daughter: Ms. Christina Maynor of Pembroke; two grandsons: Nehemiah Clay Maynor and Zackery Oxendine both of Pembroke; and one sister: Mrs. Suzanne Locklear and husband: Mr. Archie of Red Springs, NC. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Bear Swamp Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Tim Chavis and Bro. Tommy Lowry officiating. Burial will follow in the Griffin Oxendine Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. Tuesday at Bear Swamp Baptist Church.
