     Mrs. Patricia Ann Lowry Chavis, 72, of 1119 Paul Road, Pembroke, NC, departed her earthly life on April 3, 2025.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Billy Lowry Jr. and Mrs. Minnie Sampson Lowry; three brothers, Mr. Mitchell Lowry, Mr. Billy Dexter “Decky” Lowry, and Mr. Charles Frederick “Ricky” Lowry; and one sister, Mrs. Deana Warriax.

     Mrs. Chavis is survived by her husband, Mr. Kenneth E. Chavis, (49 years) of the home; her daughter, Ms. Ashkea Chavis of Pembroke; her son, Mr. Adam Chavis and his wife Mrs. Kimberly of Pembroke; three grandchildren, Tristan, Kaitlynn, and Gabriel; sisters, Mrs. Pamela Brooks of Pembroke and Mrs. Charlotte Link (Brad) of Valdese, NC; and a host of relatives and friends.

     Mrs. Patricia, preferably called “Pat” was a wonderful lady who accomplished much within her life. She retired in 2011 with 37 years of service with the NC Department of Correction as the South Central Region Director of Prisons. During her long career, Pat became the first female Native American Prison Superintendent supervising Bladen Correctional Center in NC; was affiliated with the American and North Carolina Correctional Associations and developed several policies for the DOC agency; received the “Outstanding Service Award” in 1983 & the Crime Prevention Award from the NC Department of Crime Control and Public Safety in 1987.  Pat also taught courses within the Criminal Justice program at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Upon her retirement, Pat was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. 

     Outside of work, Pat was an active member of Berea Baptist Church. She also looked forward to spending time with family & friends at get-togethers, going fishing, doing her crafts, gardening, and writing. In 2013, she was thrilled to announce the publication of her first novel “Just Killing Time”.

     The funeral will be 4 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2025, at Berea Baptist Church with the Rev: Chris Hunt officiating. Burial will follow on the Lumbee Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. Monday, April 7, 2025, at Berea Baptist Church.
