Mr. James Wesley Locklear, also known as “Hobby” gained his wings on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at the age of 82, peacefully at his home. He was born February 6, 1943 to the late Mr. Jack & Mrs. Rosa Lee Locklear. He was also preceded in death by his daughter: Ms. Tammy Marie Wynne; his brothers: Mr. Lacy, Mr. Hugie, Mr. Jack, Mr. Earl and Mr. Percell; sisters: Ms. Lee Anna, Ms. Joyce, Ms. Myrna, Ms. Katie Lee, Ms. Rosa and Ms. Sally.
He moved to Greensboro in his early years and found employment with Barnhill Road Construction, driving heavy equipment, building new highways, interstates and bridges. His favorite saying to us in his last days was that “Ladybird Johnson promised him lifetime benefits as long as he lived”. He found interest in hunting and fishing and loved his trucks, tractors and cows and enjoyed traveling to the mountains. After retirement and returning home, he enjoyed spending Sundays watching Nascar and often mentioned the time he met Richard Petty and was invited to his level cross home. He made it a priority to visit his brothers and sisters, as he was the last living sibling.
He attended church at Bakers Chapel for many years and also spent many years with his companion: Ms. Linda Taylor. During his battle with dementia, his nieces: Ms. Ruth and Ms. Susan were very devoted to his well-being. He lived his life being very dedicated to what he done and he loved his Jack Russells: Bubba and Nelly very much.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Bakers Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Lindbergh Chavis officiating. Burial will follow in the J & R Locklear family cemetery.
Mr. Locklear was Papa to five grandchildren: Mrs. Latisha Nicole Wynne, Mr. John Cameron Bryant, Ms. Tamara Lashe Bryant, Ms. Kiera Oxendine and Ms. Alexia Oxendine; great-grandpa to: Kierra Wynne, Kylon, Kyleigh, Addison, Zoey, Haizley and Nahla; great-great-grandpa to: Kyson, Kyzlee and Kyngston and a host of relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. Saturday, November 1, 2025 at Bakers Chapel Baptist Church.
