Ms. Mary Magdalene “Mag” Chavis Lowry of St. Anna Road was born October 4, 1930 and departed this life Sunday, July 10, 2022. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 69 years: Mr. Winford Lowry; son: Mr. Derek Lowry; her parents: Mr. Dannie and Mrs. Cassie Chavis; a brother: Mr. Dannie Chavis, Jr.; four sisters: Ms. Louvenia Ledwell, Ms. Louise Chavis, Ms. Rosetta Garrett and Ms. Linda Davis; and a special son-in-law: Mr. Gary.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at Sandy Plains United Methodist Church with Rev. Matthue Locklear and Rev. Dr. Robert Mangum officiating. The burial will follow in the Sandcutt Cemetery.
Ms. Mag is survived by her daughter: Ms. Panthia Locklear; two sons: Mr. Ricky Lowry (Sonya) of Pembroke and Mr. Stephen Lowry (Trina) of Clayton, NC, a grandson who was raised in the home: Mr. Stephen Lowry (Vanessa) of Clayton, NC; seven grandchildren: Nakesha, Garrick, Autumn, Joshua, Sarah, Wayne and Chole; six great-grandchildren: Noah, Niyah, Christopher, Nicholas, Kason and Tristian; one brother: Mr. Hudell Chavis (Jean) and Michael Chavis (Patricia); four sisters: Ms. Verona Jackson of Pembroke, Ms. Barbara Strickland of Manassas VA, Ms. Melba Harris and Ms. Patricia Chavis of Maxton, NC.
Ms. Mag was a graduate of Pembroke College. While attending Pembroke she performed in many of the school productions. After graduation Mag taught in Hoke County until she retired in 1989. She was the first Mama Cumbo in Strike At The Wind and remained for years. She sang in the choir at Bethel Hill where she grew up. After her marriage she sang at New Hope, taught Sunday School, directed Vacation Bible School and Christmas plays; In 2004 she joined Sandy Plains UMC and continued her music ministry. Mag was also known for her cooking, growing flowers, shopping and working many hours for her family that she loved dearly.
The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at Sandy Plains United Methodist Church.
