Mr. Willard Cummings, 86, of 3916 North Hwy 710, Pembroke, was born August 1, 1930 and passed away, after a brief illness, Friday, June 30, 2017, at Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton. He was preceded in death by his parents: Mr. Newton, Sr. & Mrs. Flora Ann Lowry Cummings; his wife: Mrs. Lora Neil Brooks Cummings; his brothers: Mr. Millard Cummings, Mr. Earl Benson, Cummings, Mr. Wilton Rendell Cummings and Mr. Frank Wesley Cummings; one granddaughter: Tamela and two great-grandsons: Nathan and Caden.
The funeral will be 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Mt. Olive Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Revs: Stevie Jacobs, Lindbergh Chavis and Dr. Sam Wynn officiating. Burial will follow in the Cummings Family Cemetery.
Surviving are his children: Mr. David Anthony, Ms. Kathy, Mrs. Stephana(John), Mrs. Sandy(Paul), Ms. Lora Denise, Mr. Jonathan, Mr. Philip(Tabatha) and Mrs. Mary Ann(Russell); his siblings: Ms. Welthie, Ms. Willa Mae, Ms. Nina Ruth, Mr. Newton, Jr.(Mable), Mr. Carlton(Andrea), Ms. Ella Mae, Mrs. Sara Ann(Rudy), Ms. Mary Ann and Mrs. Betty Lou(Tommy); grandchildren: Rebecca, Meredith, Russell, Doris, Vince, Samantha, Adam, Thomas, Perla, Jon, Charles, Joshua, Chad, Cassandra, Marcus and Flora; twenty-three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mr. Cummings served in the US Army from 1948-1952. He served eight months in the Korean Conflict as a combat medic and parachutist. He married Ms. Lora Neil Brooks on December25, 1952. He made a promise to serve the Lord while in Korea and was baptized at Costner Ave. Baptist Church in Illinois. He attended drafting school and completed an Associates Degree in Drafting and began his career as a draftsman with Scully-Jones, which became Bendix Corp. before he left his position to move his family home to Prospect in 1977. After returning home to North Carolina, he and his sons Jonathan and Philip built the family home. Later, he was hired by DuPont Nafion Corp. as a general technician and was moved to a drafting position. He worked with DuPont to draw construction plans for much of the construction around the plant until his retirement in 1996. He also drew blue prints for his family members’ homes and for community churches including Gray Pond, Friendship Baptist Community Holiness Church of Rennert and Mt. Olive Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a founding member of the Men for Missions organization, the VFW and taught Sunday School at St. Anna Freewill Baptist Church as well as Mt. Olive and also helped coordinate the Senior Citizens Group at Mt. Olive. Mr. Cummings was a problem solver and loved to be of service to his family, country, church and community.
The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Mt. Olive Pentecostal Holiness Church
