MS. EVANGELINE “Vangie” LOCKLEAR

Ms. Evangeline “Vangie” Locklear, of 1900 Lake Drive, Laurinburg, NC was born on May 22, 1957 and departed this life on February 17, 2025. Vangie was preceded in death by her parents: Mr. James B. Locklear, Sr and Mrs. Annie Ruth Lowry Locklear; siblings: Mr. James B. Locklear, Jr, Ms. Hilda Oxendine and Ms. Angelina Locklear-Taylor.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2025 at Mt. Airy Baptist Church with Rev. Kelvin Locklear officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Vangie is survived by her siblings: Ms. Linda L. Dinkins, Mr. Dexter Locklear Sr, Ms. Vera Lindsey and Mr. R. D. Locklear.

Vangie’s mother always said she was the prettiest of her four daughters. Although a normal, healthy newborn, Vangie contracted meningitis at five months of age. Her resulting complications included brain damage, hearing loss, partial paralysis and seizures. At an early age, her family learned she still has a will of her own. While she would readily drink one of her mother’s Pepsi’s or devour a banana, she would shake her head and “lock her jaws” to avoid taking medicine. When pleased, her smile was adorable.

After our mother’s death in 1981, Vangie’s sisters Vera and Angelina became her primary caregivers until 1990. On February 1, 1990, she had the good fortune to become the first resident of a newly built group home in Laurinburg, NC. With 24/7 professional staffing, Vangie received a greater quantity and quality of care than her siblings could have provided.

The visitation will be 2 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2025 at Mt. Airy Baptist Church.
