MR. JOSEPH ALLEN MCGIRT

MR. JOSEPH ALLEN MCGIRT

Mr. Joseph Allen McGirt, 87, was born September 27, 1935 and went to his heavenly home on Friday, September 22, 2023 surrounded by his family. He is preceded in death by his parents: Mr. Allen and Elizabeth McGirt.

The graveside service will be 3:00 p.m., Thursday, September 28, 2023 at Sandcutt Cemetery with Rev. Marshall Locklear officiating.

Mr. McGirt, a former professor of Biology at UNC-Pembroke, was highly respected and admired by his students.  Because of the rigor he demanded, many went on to pursue medical school, other scientific careers, and teaching.  Countless students have commented that Mr. McGirt had an easygoing manner that drew students to him. Many remained friends throughout his life. They all have agreed that “he was an excellent professor and a wonderful person to work with.”

In the community, Joe was best known as a master picture framer.  Not only was he known for his precision and exactness, “Mr. McGirt” had an eye for the artistic quality of the work.  His work is art and is exhibited in homes and public spaces all over the region.

He is survived by two sons: Mr. Allen Wayne (Regina) and Mr. David (Angeline); five grandchildren: Courtney, Jordan, Mallory, Joseph and Jacob; seven great-grandchildren: Dylan, Hayleigh, Kamryn, Clark, Londyn, Kenadie and Donivan.

I guess my fonddess memory of Mr. Joe is when he helped (mostly him) me build and construct a headboard and footboard for our Master bedroom. We had so much fun after I had convinced him I was satisified with his beautiful design of the image i had in my head of the end result. It was beautiful!! Mr. Joe was a master with wood. Thank you Mr. Joe for those memories. Our sincere condolence to the family. God’s peace be with you all.
