MR. GURNEY HUNT

Mr. Gurney Hunt, 85, of 885 Hezekiah Road, Pembroke, NC was born to the late Peter Hunt and Etta Jane Hunt on March 26, 1939 and departed this life on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at his home. He is preceded in death by three brothers: Mr. Enarris Harris, Mr. Edsol Hunt and Mr. Bobby Earl Hunt; two sons: Mr. Jeffery Dean Hunt and Mr. Kevin Dwayne Hunt and a daughter: Ms. Flossie Maria Hunt.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19, 2024 at Prospect Community Church with Revs. Dr. Sam Wynn, Dr. Bob Mangum, Dr. Kenneth Locklear and Ray Books officiating. Burial will follow in the Hunts Family Cemetery.

Mr. Gurney leaves behind the love of his life and his soulmate for 63 years, his wife: Mrs. Bessie Hunt; four children: Mr. Randy Hunt (Teresa), Mr. Grady Lee Hunt (Karon), Mr. Ronald Brent Hunt (Celeste) and Mr. Donald Kent Hunt (Nahir); a sister: Mrs. Carrie Mable Jones (Russell) and two brothers: Mr. Gerald David Hunt (Ruth) and Mr. Joseph Arn Hunt (Geraldine); 17 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Extended family and friends are too numerous to count, but he cherished his relationships with each of them.

He was a devout Christian and member of Prospect United Methodist Church (now Prospect Community Church), where he served in several leadership roles including as a member of the Board of Trustees, member of the Staff Parish Committee, member of the Finance Committee, member of the Executive Committee of the Church Council and the Church Lay Leader for more than twenty years. He also held numerous leadership roles with the United Methodist Conference. Mr. Gurney was a founding member of Prospect Community Men and sang with the group that included his twin sons, Brent and Kent, for more than 45 years.

He was a successful businessman as he built Hunt’s Drywall from the ground up to a very successful drywall business with a stellar reputation for quality work throughout southeastern North Carolina and beyond. Many of his employees became like family over the years and he treated them as such. He parlayed his success in the drywall business to a successful farming operation and was the owner along with Ms. Bessie of Gurney & Bessie Hunt Farms. But if you asked him he was quick to say that he was just a steward and a caretaker of the Good Lord’s property while here on earth.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Prospect Community Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to the charity of your choice in Mr. Gurney’s memory.
