Mr. James Monroe Chavis, 83, of 211 Shelby Drive was born July 5, 1937 to Mr. J.W. and Ms. Crosby Chavis. He left his earthly home to be with his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, August 19th, 2020. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, who raised him: Ms. Arena Chavis; his mother: Ms. Crosby Chavis Jones; his step-father: Mr. Reggie Jones; his wife: Mrs. Mary Sue Chavis; one of his daughters: Mrs. Sue Ellen Brooks; his aunts who were like his sisters: Ms. Evelyn Sampson, Ms. Ada Hunt, Ms. Lillian Oxendine; and his uncle: Mr. Frank Chavis.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, August 22, 2020 at Mt. Airy Baptist Church with Revs. Adrian Hammonds, Steve Strickland, Kelvin Locklear and Marlie Locklear officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Airy Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Monroe is survived by his daughter: Mrs. Charlotte Chavis Johnson; his sisters: Ms. Mary Alice Chavis Meyers and Ms. Barbara Wagner; his brothers: Mr. Mitch Jones, Mr. Frank Jones, Mr. Clarence “Tiny” Jones and Mr. Charlie Jones; his grandchildren: Ryan Alexander Johnson, Marri Elizabeth Brooks, Sherri Brooks, and Faith Brooks-Lowry; his great-grandchildren: Ricky Sampson Jr., Zachariah Sampson, and Simon Lowry; his sons-in-law: Rev. E. Ray Brooks and Dr. Christopher Johnson, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
