Mrs. Dorothy was a 1951 graduate of Pembroke High School. Upon graduation of high school, she moved to Charlotte for a summer job opportunity and there she remained for more than 10 years, residing in a rooming house for females. This life experience emboldened Dorothy, as well as helped to cultivate a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment in life. She returned to Pembroke where upon she began teaching kindergarten at Berea Baptist Church and married Walter. Dorothy soon graduated from Pembroke State University with a degree in Education. Her career in teaching spanned over 40 years where she taught students of various ages. She began her career with the Public Schools of Robeson County and eventually retired with the North Carolina Community College System.
Mrs. Dorothy’s life was dedicated to the selfless service of those whose voice was seldom heard. She was a champion for the grieved and unjustly offended, a voice for many. She was a dedicated humanitarian who served on multiple advisory boards including Lumbee Regional Development Association (LRDA), Center for Community Action and Robeson County Public Library.
Mrs. Dorothy was a lover of people — ALL people! She had the “gift of gab.” She was eager to discover your family connections but more than that, she was compelled to share the love of Jesus with each and every person she encountered.
While the roles of Dorothy were many, the roles in which she was most proud were those of Mama and Grandma. She will be remembered most as a loving wife, mother and grandmother; devoted daughter and sister; exceptional aunt and friend. When remembering Dorothy, think of her gentle disposition, genuine character and gracious spirit. It was her greatest desire for all she knew and loved to “get your stuff together because “I WANT US ALL BE TOGETHER IN HEAVEN!”
