Mr. Alvin M. Lowry

Alvin Melton Lowry passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 19, 2025.  He was born on April 30,1936 to the late Claude Lowry and Sara Eliza Hunt Lowry.  He grew up in Pembroke, North Carolina  with his 14 siblings where he spent his youth working on the family farm.  He was known lovingly by his siblings as the prankster who always had a smile on his face.  

Alvin graduated from Pembroke High School in 1954.  Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Orleans, France with an engineering battalion.  After separating from the Army in 1957, he moved to Cahokia, Illinois where he and Wilma were married.  Alvin worked for Amren Union Electric as a master pipe fitter and a master welder.   He and Wilma built their first house in Granite City, Illinois from the ground up where they enjoyed many years with their children and friends. 

 Alvin was very active in his church serving as a trustee, usher, volunteer, and organizer of their church bus ministery. Alvin was a  humble servant who gave graciously of his time and resources.  

 An avid fisherman, Alvin loved trout fishing in Bennett Springs, Missouri and inspired that love in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Alvin was a skilled craftsman who built furniture for their house and for friends and family.  A seasoned traveler, he and Wilma journeyed to 48 states visiting family and friends along the way.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Wilma Lee Capper Lowry, daughter Sherrie Lowry (Curtis) Jackson of  Robertsdale, Alabama, and son Alvin Lowry, Jr., (Kim) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; four grandchildren, Mandi Rae Jackson (Rett Phillips),of Daphne, Alabama, Daniel Robert (Paloma Florez) Lowry of Albuquerque, New Mexico, William Dale Jackson of  Hillsboro, Missouri, and Kaitlin Ann Lowry (Brendan) Fuller of West Alice, Wisconsin; four great-grandchildren, Hannah Rae Webb, Landry James Webb, Robert Henry Fuller and Bennett Jeffrey Lowry Fuller and bonus grandson, Colt Everett Phillips; sisters, Jo Ellen Worrel, Elaine Strickler, and Eleanor Otten; brothers, Harry Richard Lowry, Wayne LaFrance Lowry, and William Alfred (Rebecca) Lowry, and 22 nieces and nephews.  

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters Aver Lowry, Sarah Lowry, Jacqueline (Lowry) Glass, Altha (Lowry) Whitehead and Inez (Lowry) Dial; brothers Claude Lowry, Jr., Dolvin Lowry, and Robert Lowry; sisters-in-law Sandra Lowry and Grace Lowry;  brothers-in law Sidney Strickler, Wilks Whitehead, James Dial and John Worrell.

The funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, November 24, 2025 at New Philadelphus Methodist Church with the Rev. Henry Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in the Lowry Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12-1:30 p.m. Monday, November 24, 2025 at the church.
