MR. ROGER RAY LOCKLEAR

Mr. Roger Ray Locklear, 75, of 608 Kenlough Drive, Charlotte, NC was born in Robeson County, NC on June 4, 1947 and departed this life on April 1, 2023. He was preceded in death by his father: Mr. Archie R. Locklear; mother: Ms. Fairella Locklear; sister: Ms. Evelyn Locklear and a brother: Mr. Archie Ray Locklear.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at Mt. Airy Baptist Church with Rev. Kelvin Locklear, Thomas Oxendine and Steve Strickland officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Roger leaves to cherish his memories, two brothers: Mr. Ronald Locklear (Lori) and Mr. Donald Locklear (Linda); three sisters: Ms. Minnie Pearl Locklear, Ms. Magenell Oxendine (Arnold) and Ms. Joann Demery; a special aunt: Ms. Ludahlia Cummings; a special cousin: Ms. Mary Lee Locklear and the following special friends: Mr. Dodson, Mr. Herman, Mr. Milton Ray, and Mr. Joe Jr.; many nieces, nephews, amazing cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends from 2-3 Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at Mt. Airy Baptist Church.

After graduating high school in 1965, Mr. Roger moved to Charlotte, where he built his life. He worked and retired from Duke Power Company after 27 years of service. Even though he lived in Charlotte, he made frequent trips home to visit with family and friends. He looked forward to family gatherings and especially loved weekend beach trips, also known as “Granny Weekends” with his mother, sisters and nieces.

Mr. Roger was a very modest man and lived a simple life. However, he did enjoy a few simple pastimes. When you saw him, it wasn’t long before you saw his friend “Levi” (his chewing tobacco pouch). Levi Garrett was his favorite chewing tobacco for many years until it became too expensive for him so he later transitioned to Tennessee Chew. Regardless of the name brand, the chew was good but the conversation and fellowship he shared with loved ones over that chew was even better.

Often times when ending conversation with his family, instead of saying goodbye Roger would say, “be good”. He is completely healed now, and his body is at rest, so this isn’t goodbye, its “be good” until we met again.
