Mr. Perry Wayne Sampson, 53, lost an 11-month courageous battle with brain cancer on Friday, November 30, 2012, surrounded by family and friends in his home. He was born on January 25, 1959. He was predeceased by his parents, Mr. Charlie Edward Sampson (1990) and Mrs. Helen Brayboy Sampson (2000): his grandparents, Mr. Ambrose Sampson(1953) and Mrs. Callie Mae “Tootie” Sampson (1962); Mr. Tecumseh Bryan Brayboy, Jr. (1987) and Mrs. Eva Harris Brayboy (2010).
After attending Pembroke State University, Mr. Sampson’s entire career was as a master cook with Campbell Soup Company, at its Maxton, N.C., manufacturing plant where he worked for 28 years. He was a member of Harper’s Ferry Baptist Church. Mr. Sampson was best-known, widely recognized, and respected as an outstanding amateur golfer who dominated play on area golf courses for more than three decades, beginning in his teen years. He thoroughly enjoyed a life-time of playing with his golf buddies, including his late father who taught him the sport.
Mr. Sampson’s family is especially grateful for the untiring tender loving care given him by his beloved sister-in-law, Ms. Linda Collins, over the years, and especially during the 11 months of his final illness. The family also acknowledges with deepest gratitude the decades of abiding love, loyal friendship, and support shown Mr. Sampson by his former Campbell Soup Company co-workers, Mrs. Virginia Gale Strickland and Mr. Randy Jones. The family also wishes to express sincere gratefulness and love to Uncle Ray Brayboy who was there with unwavering love and support from beginning to end.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Harper’s Ferry Baptist Church immediately followed by the Funeral Service at 3:00 pm with the Rev. Donald Bullard, Bro. Lindsey Locklear and Bro. Randy Jones officiating. The burial will be at the Harper’s Ferry Baptist Church Cemetery. Services conducted by Locklear & Son Funeral Home.
Mr. Sampson is survived by his wife: Paula Collins Sampson and their 15-year-old son, Robert Edward Sampson of the home; his brother, Terry Lynn Sampson of Pembroke, N.C.; his maternal aunts, Elaine Brayboy Haraway of Gaithersburg, MD, and Barbara Braveboy-Locklear(Horace) of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.; his maternal uncles, Bobby D. Brayboy(Cathy) of Lumberton, N.C., Isaac Timothy Brayboy of Cary, N.C., and L. Ray Brayboy(Bea) of Laurinburg, N.C.; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Collins(Brenda) and Willie Collins(Helen) of Rowland, N.C.; sister-in-law, Linda Collins of Rowland, N.C.; 2 nieces and 5 nephews; a community of golf buddies; his family of co-workers; and a host of relatives and friends who loved him.
