Mrs. Eva B. Sampson

                                   Pembroke
    
Mrs. Eva B. Sampson, 81, of 100 Howard Street, Pembroke, departed this life on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at her home surrounded by her family.  She was born in the Bethel Hill community of Robeson County on July 31, 1932, the oldest child of Mr. Clyde & Mrs. Lillie Mae Brewington, both deceased.  She was a 1949 graduate of Martin Behrman H.S. in New Orleans, LA.  She married Mr. John W. (Ned) Sampson of Pembroke, February 6, 1954. After marriage, she worked with Dr. Robertson as a nurse for several years.  She was a 1968 graduate of Southeastern Community College, becoming the first Lumbee registered nurse(RN).
    
She began her nursing career at Southeastern General Hospital now known as Southeastern Regional Medical Center.  In 1970, she became the director of Student Health Services at Pembroke State University, now known as University of North Carolina-Pembroke.  She also received her BS degree in Psychology and Sociology from UNC-P.
    
During her tenure of 25 years at UNC-P, she served on numerous committees and as an advisor for Tri-Sigma Sorority.  Mrs. Eva was very active on a local and state level.  She was a member of the NC State Nurses Association and established the John W. (Ned) Sampson endowed scholarship as well as a Chancellorís Club member at UNC-P.  Her community service work included: Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, volunteered for Pembroke Rescue Squad, Caregiver support group, Board member-Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Hospice of Robeson County, Professional and Business Womenís Club of Pembroke, Lady Lionís Club, Womenís Mission Union, among other organizations.
    
After retirement from UNC-P, she remained active in her community volunteer work.  Another passion was traveling and following her sonís basketball teams across the country with her husband.  She enjoyed numerous hobbies including gardening, ceramics, cake decorating, baking, crocheting and knitting as well as caring for her husband and family.  She was an active member of Berea Baptist Church.
    
Mrs. Sampson was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter: Belinda Sampson; two sisters: Ms. Ruth Stankiewicz and Ms. Jeanne Mandel and two brothers: infant Clyde Brewington and Mr. James Earl Jones.
    
The funeral will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at Berea Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Hunt officiating.  Burial will follow in the Lumbee Memorial Gardens.
    
Mrs. Sampson is survived by her husband: Mr. John W. (Ned) Sampson; three daughters: Mrs. Ursula Freeman(Weldon), Ms. Karen Sampson and Mrs. Suzanne Ems(David); a son: Mr. Kelvin Sampson(Karen L.); a brother: Mr. Hardy L. Brewington(Peggy); two sisters: Ms. Sara Scott and Mrs. Myrtle Harvey(Dave); five grandchildren: Natalya Locklear(Nokoa), Lauren Sampson, Kellen Sampson, Austin Ems and Justin Ems; two grandchildren: Cayten and Charla Locklear and a host of relatives and friends.
    
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday, January 13, 2014, at Locklear & Son Funeral Home.
