Mrs. Flora C. Ransom

                                    Lumberton
     Mrs. Flora C. Ransom, 87, of 377 Back Swamp Road of Lumberton was born on October 13, 1926, in Robeson County. She departed this life on Friday, May 16, 2014, at First Health Hospice and Palliative Care in Pinehurst, N.C. She is preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Ransom; her parents: Alfred Franklin and Ethel Locklear Chavis; four sisters: Agnes C. Godalla, Janet C. Burnette, Francis C. Panko, and Mary Ellen Chavis; and five brothers: Ray Chavis, Samuel Vernon Chavis, Carlton Hayes Chavis, Alfred Chavis, Jr., and Russell Chavis.
     The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at Berea Baptist Church with pastors: Chris Hunt, William Griffin and Bruce Swett officiating. Burial will follow in Lumbee Memorial Gardens.
     Mrs. Ransom is  survived by three daughters: Betty Ann Merriman and her husband, Glen, of Raleigh; Dr. Cheryl Locklear of Pembroke; and Angela Maynor of Carrboro; one son, David Ransom of Lumberton; ten grandchildren: Sherri McCraw and her husband, Mark of Raleigh; Melissa Mixon of Raleigh; Dr. Nanci Harp and her husband, Chris, of Pinehurst; Dr. Sarah Brewington and her husband, Ben, of Pinehurst; Christopher Locklear of Red Springs; Tim Maynor of Carrboro; and Terryn, Ryan, Kaylee and Emilee Ransom of Lumberton and seven great-grandchildren.
     Mrs. Flora Ransom earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from what is now The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She taught school in Robeson County for more than 25 years. She was also a dedicated and faithful member of the Pembroke Business and Professional Women's Club for 40 years. She was a member of the North Carolina Retired Teacher's Association, Soaring Eagle Elder's Group of the Lumbee Tribe, a member of Privilege Plus and the OK Club of Lumberton. A lifelong member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Flora Ransom was a dedicated educator and a loyal, devoted and loving mother, grandmother and friend. She was especially proud of the accomplishments of her children; their continued successes and service will serve as testament to her legacy.
     The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, from 7-9 p.m. at Locklear & Son Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Burnt Swamp Baptist Association, 450 Prospect Road, Pembroke, N.C. 28372.
