Mr. Martin Luther Lowry, Jr. was born in Robeson County to the late Rev. M. L. Lowry and wife, Mrs. Cammie Lowry. He was married to the late Joanne Marie Husson for 45 years, until her death in 1995. Mr. Lowry (Junior) is preceded in death by five siblings; Mr. Garnett Lowry, Mr. Truett Lowry and Mr. Glenn Lowry, Mrs. Eulalia R. Williams, Mrs. Daphne D. Jones.
Mr. Lowry served in the Armed Forces for three years completing his tour of duty in Korea. He returned to Pembroke State College graduating in 1954. He was active in music and arts and served as President of the Student Council. He is listed in the "Who's Who in the American Schools and Colleges. Mr. Lowry's teaching career began in North Carolina, but most of his career as an educator was in Maryland. His hobbies included fishing, wood-carving, painting, photography and music. Mr. Lowry's most recent interests included ballroom dancing, where his entered dance competitions and achieved many awards. Mr. Lowry's devotion to his faith and family was evident in his courage, persistence in life and determination, until his final days.
The funeral will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 13, 2013, at Pembroke First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Elliott officiating. Burial will follow in the Lumbee Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Martin & Mrs. Joanne raised seven children; Mr. Craig Allen Lowry, Mrs. Denise Lowry Brannon, Mr. Myron Bruce Lowry, Miss Lila Lisa Lowry, Mrs. Michele Lowry Sweeney, Mr. Martin Vincent Lowry and Mr. David Lee Lowry who gave them 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Mr. Lowry is survived by two brothers and two sisters; Dr. Otis M. Lowry, Mr. Brantly Lowry, Mrs. Maxine Chavis and Mrs. Shirley Lowry and a host of relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Locklear & Son Funeral Home.
