Mr. Johnny Allen Locklear, 84, of Pembroke, was born November 28, 1928 and departed this life on Tuesday, January 8, 2013. He is preceded in death by his parents: Mr. Albert and Mrs. Lou Kitty Bullard Locklear.
The funeral will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2013 at Bear Swamp Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Cummings officiating. Burial will follow in the Locklear Family Cemetery.
Mr. Locklear is survived by his son: Mr. Lofty Locklear III of Pembroke; three daughters: Mrs. Joyce Pierce and husband Mr. Sam of Greensboro, Mrs. Barbara Bullard and husband Mr. Randolph of Pembroke, and Ms. Retha Faye Locklear of the home and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mr. Johnny taught school for more than 30 years. Following his retirement he served as a substitute teacher for 20 years in Scotland and Robeson County Schools. He was a Sunday school teacher and a deacon at Bear Swamp Baptist Church for 65 years. He was known for his culinary skills. He was an avid baker and specialized in making his famous red velvet cake, Japanese fruit cake, and pound cake.
Mr. Johnny loved literature and poetry. Among his favorite poems were Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” and Alfred Lord Tennyson’s “Crossing The Bar.” His favorite church songs were “Amazing Grace” and “It Is Well with My Soul.” He will be missed by his family, his church, and his many school family members. He touched the lives of so many people through his church and school careers.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Locklear & Son Funeral Home.
