Mr. Herbert Locklear, 92, of 6618 NC Hwy 72 West, departed this life on Monday, March 25, 2013, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. He was born May 31, 1920 to the late Mr. Daniel Webster & Mrs. Ruthie Jane Cummings Locklear of the Mt. Airy Community. His parents were farmers and reared six children.
At the age of 22, Herbert married Ms. Opal Elizabeth Blanks of Pembroke and they had two children: a daughter: Brenda Locklear, who was their first born and a son: Arthur Harold Locklear who died on April 15, 1972. He is also preceded in death by three sisters: Ms. Glennie Bell Lowry, Ms. Leona Wilkins, Ms. Strawdy Cummings and two brothers: Mr. Millard Locklear and Mr. Russell W. Locklear, Sr.
Herbertís occupation consisted of farming, plumbing and owner and manager of Herbís Superette for eight years. Being an active member at Mt. Airy Baptist Church, Herbert served in many leading roles. He joined the church in 1941 and was appointed to the Deacon Board in 1951. He served as Secretary in the Adult Class, Teacher in the Junior Department(Childrenís Division), Young Peopleís class and Director/Teacher in the Intermediate Department(Youth) for 35 years. He served as a Deacon for 30 years and was Chairman of the Deacon Board for 20 of the 30 years. In 1981, Mt. Airy began a rotating system and at that time he rotated off. He also served as a member of the nominating committee which he chaired for a number of years. He was also a member of the Pulpit Committee and Chairman of the Baptismal Committee.
The funeral will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Mt. Airy Baptist Church with the Revs: Dr. Mike Cummings, Steve Strickland and Keith Long officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Airy Church Cemetery.
He leaves to cherish his memories; his loving wife of seventy-one years: Mrs. Opal Elizabeth Blanks Locklear of the home; a daughter: Mrs. Brenda Lowry Scott(Rev. Willie Scott) of Maxton; three grandchildren: Mr. Christopher Dale Lowry(Chris), Mr. Clarence Kelly Lowry(Robin) and Mr. Corey Stephen Lowry all of Pembroke; five great-grandchildren: Kasey Lynn Lowry, Breeonna Leigh Lowry, Chance Maclyn Lowry all of Pembroke, Haley Elizabeth Lowry of Maxton and Harley Daylon of Bolton; and his pride and joy a great-great-grandson: Kinston Christopher Locklear. Most of all, Mr. Locklear leaves a host of relatives and friends who cherished time spent in his home gleaning lots of wisdom concerning church and community history.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at Locklear & Son Funeral Home.
