After an extended illness, Mrs. Ruth Sampson Locklear Dial of Pembroke succumbed on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton at the age 86.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Mr. Tommie Dial; her parents: Mr. Bill Locklear of Mt. Airy, NC and Ms. Ruthie Jane Sampson Locklear of Pembroke; her grandfather: Mr. Oscar R. Sampson, a minister, educator and member of the Board of Trustees at Pembroke Normal School, where he served thirty-two years; her grandmother, Mrs. Susie J. Oxendine Sampson and a special aunt: Ms. Mary Eliza Sampson.
The funeral will be 2:30 Sunday, January 11, 2015 at First United Methodist Church with the Revs: Robert Ray, James Graham, and Michael Elliott officiating. Burial will follow at Lumbee Memorial Gardens. Instate one hour prior to service.
Mrs. Dial is survived by a sister: Mrs. Mary Sue Locklear Gerloff; three nephews all of Richmond, VA and her aunt: Mrs. Martha Sampson Locklear of Jennings, LA. She leaves to mourn, special friends and caregivers: Mrs. Yvonne Barnes Dial, cousins: Mr. William and Mrs. Ann Sampson and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Mrs. Ruth was born on the campus of UNC-Pembroke, formerly Indian Normal School, on January 17, 1929. She was nurtured by her aunts, Mary, Lucy and Martha.
She was a role model for young people through her involvement with the Lumbee Center for the Performing Arts. She made a difference in the lives of the students as a teacherís assistant at Purnell Swett High School. She bridged the gap of previous generations for those of us to follow by her examples of high expectations, poise and impeccable manners.
For those of us who had the privilege to know and love her, we will always value and cherish her spirit, her musical talent and special personality.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Locklear &Son Funeral Home.
