Mrs. Clara M. Chavis

Mrs. Clara Mae Chavis was born August 6, 1937 to the late Mr. Woodrow and Mrs. Margie Jones. On March 25, 2013 the angels were given a command to escort Mrs. Clara from her earthly home to her heavenly mansion.
Mrs. Chavis was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years: Mr. William “Can” Chavis; a son: Mr. Allen Russell Chavis; one daughter: Mrs. Ramona C. Lloyd; a son-in-law: Mr. George Lloyd; a grandson: Mr. Bryan Russell Chavis; a great-grand daughter: Miss Summer Miracle Chavis.
The funeral will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2013, at Island Grove Baptist Church with the Revs: Larry Locklear and Grady Chavis officiating.  Burial will follow in the Island Grove Church Cemtery.
Mrs. Chavis retired after 37 years of service at Crandall/J.P. Stevens textile. She was dedicated to her work and fellow workers who became lifetime friends. Ms. Clara was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxillary Post 2843 for 33 years where she served as vice president. She worked tirelessly and felt honored each year to collect the donations. She was also a member of the Philadelphus Cluster Group. She grew and donated plants and baked cakes each year for many group events. The Cluster Group honors senior citizens in the Prospect community and in surrounding communities and strives to build relationships with young people and senior citizens.
On Sunday, March 4, 1979, Mrs. Clara made the most important decision of her life. She committed her life to the Lord Jesus Christ. And so began her Christian life of service at Island Grove Baptist Church. She was a faithful Sunday school member for 34 years. Ms. Clara and her husband, Mr. Can, were the founders of honoring those who served in the military by placing American flags on their graves at Island Grove Church Cemetery. After Mr. Chavis’ death, Ms. Clara and grandsons faithfully continued honoring our veterans for their service. She became a woman of God and developed strength and courage to carry her through the valleys and eventually to the mountain top where her final journey of eternal life has just begun. Her love, encouragement, and courageous strength will live on in the hearts and minds of her grandchildren: Mr. Chad Barry Chavis (Karen), Mr. Jason Levi Lloyd (Nicole), Mr. William Matthew Lloyd, Mrs. LeeChelle Chavis Brooks (Edward Kenneth); and great-grandchildren: Marion L. Chavis, Fallon B. Chavis, Perry Chance Chavis, Kylie Summer Chavis, Kenneth Riley Brooks, Bryne Drake Brooks, Colby  Gaige Brooks, sister-in-law and special friend for 18 years: Ms. Shirley Chavis, a daughter-in-law: Ms. Kathy L. Chavis; and family and friends to numerous to count.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. at Island Grove Baptist Church.
